Initially, the Ordinals Protocol was primarily used for issuing digital artifacts, such as NFTs, to address the issue of inscribing content like images onto the blockchain. Following the creation of BRC20, a significant number of inscriptions, termed as 'dust attacks,' emerged on Ordinals. To address this issue, Casey, the founder of Ordinals, proposed the concept of Runes based on UTXO, specifically for issuing Fungible Tokens.

The mainnet launch date for Rune was set to coincide with the Bitcoin block height of 840,000 - the next halving event, occurring in April 2024. This has led to various Rune practices within the community.

The current hottest Rune token strategies include RSIC's airdrop, block mint, and token release at the 840,000 block height.
